Who is Son Little?

Son Little, the stage name of Aaron Earl Livingston, is an American singer-songwriter and producer from Philadelphia who blends soul, blues, R&B, and hip-hop into a distinctive modern sound. He first gained attention through collaborations with artists like The Roots and RJD2 before launching his solo career in the early 2010s. His debut EP Things I Forgot (2014) introduced his stripped-down yet genre-mixing style, followed by a series of albums including Son Little (2015), New Magic (2017), Aloha (2020), and Like Neptune (2022). Across his discography, he has developed a reputation for intimate, introspective songwriting paired with experimental production, drawing from both classic American roots music and contemporary influences.

The Concert & Album Release

In a venue barely large enough to house the enormity of talent that was stepping on stage this brisk Seattle night, Son Little, graced a sold out Tractor Tavern, simultaneously, the first stop of his international tour (https://sonlittle.com/tour) and the release of his full album, Cityfolk. While, in my opinion, the venue didn't match up (no offense Tractor Tavern) with the level of artists they had pulled in - I couldn't imagine the performance taking place anywhere else. The narrow bricks walls, wood beams covered in on-theme kitsch, somehow set a very intimate ambiance for what will go down possibly as one of the most soulful experiences to have taken place within the confines of Tractor Tavern. It's hard to classify Son Little's (Aaron Livingston) sound as neo-soul: a mixture of Rhythm and Blues, Soul, Blues, Gospel, folk-pop. Seemingly effortless warm and weary vocals combined with heartfelt lyrics push Aaron's status into the range of greats like Al Geen, Sam Cooke, and Marvin Gaye as well as his contemporaries Leon Bridges and October London.
What followed was a slow burning sermon. one that never announced itself as such but had the entire room leaning in like congregants anyway.
There’s a particular tension in his live delivery that doesn’t always translate on record. A lyric that might be read simply on paper lands with a kind of quiet finality when sung out into a room that size. You could feel people catching those moments in real time, small glances exchanged and heads nodding.
It's 2026 but you wouldn't have guessed it... There were no phones held aloft in any meaningful way for most of the show, no one sifting in and out of the crowd to get another drink, just attention, afraid to leave the moment being created. The kind that’s earned, not expected. It made the room feel even smaller than it already was, like the walls had quietly leaned in a few inches to listen closer.
Aaron often interacted with the crowd, including them in songs, using them as his choir to elevate the performance. At one point jumping off stage to enter the crowd to start a fan favorite in a more organic fashion, something that could only be done at a venue of this size.

By the time the final notes were being strummed, there wasn’t any grand gesture or overdrawn goodbye. Just a kind of mutual understanding that something real had just passed through the room. The applause came quickly, explosively, it was sustained, appreciative, almost reluctant to let the night close out.
When the let out occurred into the streets of the beautiful Ballard neighborhood, there was that rare sense that the outside world had been briefly put on hold. Tractor Tavern, for all its modesty, had done exactly what rooms like that are meant to do: hold something fleeting just long enough for it to matter
It became clear that the venue wasn't a mistake but a deliberate choice to provide such an intimate experience for a lucky few.
If you can see his performance DO NOT MISS IT. His tour continues until July 10th hitting Idaho, Oregon, Hawaii, Missouri, Minnesota, Wisconsin, a slew of east coast states as well as Canada, Germany, Poland, Prague, Belgium, and the Netherlands.
It’s been 4 years since Son Little’s last album ‘Like Neptune’ was released, and while I poured over the photos from the concert, I was able to listen to it several times through. It was, what I can only describe as a breath of fresh air during times of chaos and uncertainty. Son Little maintained his signature sound while continuing to evolve and produce at a masterful level. Give it a listen.
