This year, the Trans-Siberian Orchestra (TSO) brought their Christmas gift to Seattle a bit early, and it was clear from the start that they had prepared something truly special for the city. Continuing what has become a beloved metal tradition, TSO returned to showcase the incredible dedication and hard work poured into their annual Christmas show.
For those who have attended a TSO performance before, it is well known that these shows go far beyond a typical concert. Audience members are invited into an immersive experience that blends elements of metal and classical music, dazzling fireworks reminiscent of the Fourth of July, and the wonder of a magic show. Every detail is meticulously orchestrated atop a stage production unlike any other. Each year, the show masterfully fuses heavy riffs, powerful beats, and headbanging energy with the elegance of classical instruments, complemented by the tender yet commanding voices of all the performers.
The evening’s narrative was beautifully guided by Phillip Brandon, whose narration provided meaningful context for each unfolding song and story. As the concert progressed, Al Pitrelli stepped forward to lead the band, engaging the audience and introducing every member of the touring act—both on stage and behind the scenes—including the touring crew and the Seattle TSO Chapter instrumentalists. One of the night’s most heartfelt moments came when Al paid tribute to his late friend Paul O’Neill, performing the moving acoustic song “Sleep” by Savatage, which was co-composed by Paul himself.
In celebration of the 25th anniversary of TSO’s iconic and much-loved album “Beethoven’s Last Night,” the band treated the audience to several additional songs from this masterpiece. Hearing these tracks again brought back vivid memories of first discovering the band when the album was originally released.
This year’s concert held particular significance as it marked the first time my 7- and 9-year-old children joined my wife and me for the show. This shared experience is sure to become a family tradition for years to come. We all left the venue with excitement, already looking forward to what TSO will bring to the stage next year.
